Nau mai, haere mai to The Papatūānuku Paradigm Learning Hub

Ka mua, ka muri
Walking backwards into the future

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to The Papatūānuku Paradigm Learning Hub.

The Papatūānuku Paradigm is a gender analysis tool from a Te Ao Māori lens. It was developed by Dr Kathie Irwin and commissioned by the Coalition to End Women’s Homelessness to address the issue of women’s homelessness in Aotearoa, and to contribute to ending it.

The Learning Hub is the home of the Papatūānuku Paradigm’s learning resources. You can explore them at your own pace, as a journey on your own or alongside colleagues and whānau.

The Learning Hub brings together a series of resources: research, webinars, downloadable resources, the Papatūānuku Paradigm toolkit, training videos and a training manual which is coming out soon.

Throughout your learning journey, you’ll be asked to think about how you can be part of the solution to ending women’s homelessness. You’ll be encouraged to question and influence the systems around us, while walking alongside communities, whānau, hapū and iwi to create change.

The Papatūānuku Paradigm can be applied across all the systems that shape women’s lives, because women's homelessness cannot be separated from their economic lives - pay equity, housing, employment, violence, health, caring responsibilities and retirement income are interconnected systems.

We invite you to consider how The Papatūānuku Paradigm might inform your own mahi and contribute to the collective work of ending women’s homelessness in Aotearoa.

Ngā mihi nui for your interest, your support and your willingness to learn, reflect and take action.

Approaching the kaupapa

Some of the content in The Papatūānuku Paradigm Learning Hub, and the reflections and kōrero it invites, may bring up feelings, emotions or memories connected to your own experiences, or those of people close to you. Take care of yourself and your learning tīma - stepping away from the material when needed and returning when you feel ready.

When reflecting or having kōrero with others, practise respectful and safe engagement. You may wish to consider these guidelines, or develop your own with your team. Choose what resonates with you and supports your learning together.

  • Honour the history of those who are mana whenua of the land you are on and those who have been disposed of their whenua.

  • Respect: hold space for different experiences, perspectives and ways of knowing.

  • Non-judgement: listen with curiosity and openness. There may be different ways of understanding and seeing an issue.

  • Time and space: take the time you need to reflect, pause or step away. You don’t have to have all the answers.

We are here to walk this path with you. If you have questions or need support, please get in touch with the Coalition to End Women’s Homelessness at Admin@CEWH.org.
